In a decisive step to protect young lives and uphold peace, the Government of Ghana has announced the immediate evacuation of students from Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding communities. This follows growing concerns over the safety of students in areas affected by ongoing unrest.
The evacuation coincides with a curfew imposed by the Ministry of the Interior, which took effect today, running daily from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., until further notice. This measure is aimed at reducing tensions and providing a secure environment for all.
A statement released by Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, stressed that the curfew is not just a tool for law enforcement, but also a means to ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of students currently residing or studying in the affected zones.
“It is heartbreaking to acknowledge that some of these students have become unintended targets in the conflict,” the statement noted. “The government cannot stand by while the future of our children is put at risk.”
Government agencies, security forces, and school administrators are working around the clock to implement the evacuation plan with care and efficiency. Parents and guardians are being contacted to ensure a coordinated effort that prioritises the emotional and physical wellbeing of the students.
This intervention, officials say, is a demonstration of the state’s responsibility to protect its most vulnerable and to prevent further harm amid the volatility in the region.
As the situation develops, the government has pledged to provide timely updates and calls on all citizens to cooperate fully, remain calm, and support efforts to restore peace and stability.
