The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) held a Career Fair for students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. This event, held in the Great Hall, marked the third edition of the GNPC Career Fair and was organized under the theme “Strategic Positioning for the Job Market.” The primary aim of the Career Fair is to present career opportunities to students and prepare them for the job market.
The event received support from several institutions, including CBG, Republic Bank, Star Life Assurance, AIC, Prudential Bank, GCB, Ecobank, Broad Spectrum, GIPC, Education USA, Colgate, and Carisca.
Facilitators for the event were drawn from KNUST, GNPC, and various corporate and business organizations. Their presentations covered a range of topics such as “Identifying Your Career,” “Design Thinking for Positive Change in Career Development,” “CV Writing,” “Emotional Intelligence,” and “Financial Management.”
The event commenced with Madam Selina Angmor competently delivering the purpose of the gathering.
The Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, presented the keynote address. She emphasized the importance of career fairs in opening up job options, providing networking opportunities, learning how to present oneself professionally, internships, brushing up on skills, and gaining comfort in professional environments.
Dr. Dominic Kwesi Eduah, the Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, had his address delivered on his behalf by Dr. Caroline Aggrey-Fynn, the Head of the Education and Training Unit of the GNPC Foundation. Dr. Eduah’s address highlighted the necessity for young people to strategically position themselves to take advantage of limited job opportunities. He stressed that the GNPC Foundation aims to engage with institutions in every region to prepare students for the job market even before they graduate. He noted that the first career fair was held at Takoradi Technical University (TTU), the second at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and the third at KNUST. This initiative is an integral part of GNPC’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) efforts across Ghana.
Dr. Eduah also stressed on the GNPC’s commitment to social responsibility through its foundation. He pointed out that GNPC has significantly impacted the lives of many Ghanaians through various social intervention programs and initiatives aimed at skill improvement. He urged students to value their personalities and re-adjust their career aspirations in relation to the courses they are pursuing to meet the standards and expectations of various companies and institutions.
Dr. Kwesi Duah emphasized that companies are increasingly valuing the personalities of their employees over certificates. She highlighted the importance for students to align themselves with the standards of their preferred courses and companies to enhance their employability. He pointed out that employers are looking for candidates who are not just qualified on paper but also possess the right attitude, skills, and personality traits that align with the company’s culture and values.
The GNPC Career Fair at KNUST provided a valuable platform for students to explore career opportunities, gain insights into the job market, and develop skills that will enhance their employability.
