Ghana’s Foreign Minister Represents President Mahama at Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration Mass

The Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, represented President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana at the Inauguration Mass of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square Sunday, 18th May, 2025.

The event, held at the Vatican, drew leaders and dignitaries from across the world to witness the formal commencement of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy. Mr. Ablakwa conveyed President Mahama’s congratulations and goodwill to the Holy Father on behalf of the Ghanaian government and Catholic community.

Pope Leo XIV takes over the leadership of the Catholic Church at a time marked by global humanitarian crises and calls for peace in conflict zones such as Gaza and Ukraine. Ghana, with its strong Catholic population and diplomatic ties with the Vatican, reaffirmed its commitment to global peace and interfaith dialogue.

Mr. Ablakwa’s presence at the historic ceremony underscores Ghana’s respect for the Holy See and its active role in fostering religious diplomacy on the international stage.
