Portia Dzifa Dzilah, a dedicated educator from Pakro Anglican Basic School in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has been named a regional winner in the 2025 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards. Organized by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the awards celebrate exceptional teachers worldwide.
Selected from over 5,000 nominations across 101 countries, Dzilah is among nine regional winners recognised for their outstanding contributions to education. Her commitment to inclusive education, particularly in mentoring young girls and addressing challenges such as truancy and low school enrolment in the farming community of Pakro, set her apart.
Dzilah’s initiatives include mentoring girls on food and sanitary practices and establishing a gender club to empower students. Her efforts have significantly impacted the lives of many in her community.
As a regional winner, Dzilah will receive £500 worth of books for her class, a trophy, and participate in a regional awards ceremony. Her story will also be featured in Cambridge textbooks, inspiring educators and students globally.
Reflecting on her achievement, Dzilah stated, “This recognition is not just about me; it’s about the children of Pakro and every girl who’s ever been told her dreams are out of reach. I became a teacher to change lives.”
Rod Smith, Managing Director of International Education at Cambridge, praised Dzilah’s dedication, noting that her story exemplifies the profound impact teachers have on their communities.
Dzilah now advances to the global finals, where public voting will determine the overall winner of the 2025 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards. Voting is open until April 30, 2025, and the winner will be announced on May 21, 2025.
