Ghanaian actor and producer Christian Akwasi Asamoah known professionally as Big Akwess, has publicly accused Onua TV, UTV Ghana, Max TV, and Adom TV of causing the collapse of the local movie industry by heavily prioritizing foreign telenovelas over Ghanaian productions. He asserts that the stations’ relentless airing of dubbed series often in Twi has displaced local films and deprived domestic creators of crucial broadcasting space.
The criticism aligns with long standing concerns voiced by industry figures. In 2017, according to Big Akwes, the Film Producers Association petitioned the Asantehene as they warned that dubbed telenovelas were undermining local film production and impoverishing thousands of workers.
Big Akwes reiterated that Comedian Mr Beautiful lamented how TV stations acquired foreign soaps and dubbed them into Ghanaian dialects, stating, “You can be sitting in your room watching a foreign national speaking our local dialect… this has contributed to the collapse of our local movie industry.”
