Ghana in Mourning as Ministers and Security Officials Die in Military Helicopter Crash

Ghana is in a state of national mourning following the tragic loss of eight prominent individuals, including two government ministers, in a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter crash near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.

The Z-9 military helicopter, which departed from Accra en route to Obuasi, went off radar shortly after takeoff. A coordinated search led to the discovery of the wreckage on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. Sadly, all eight occupants on board were confirmed dead.

In an official statement issued from Jubilee House, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the fatalities and announced that national flags would be flown at half-mast across the country until further notice.

He described the loss as “an immeasurable tragedy” that has shaken the nation.

  3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  4. Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman, NDC
  5. Mr. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
  6. Squadron Leader Peter – GAF Pilot
  7. Flying Officer Twum Ampadu – GAF
  8. Sergeant Ernest Addo – GAF

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound grief over the incident, calling it “a dark day in the history of our Republic.” He paid tribute to the deceased, describing them as “patriots who died in active service to the country.”

Military authorities, along with officials from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, have commenced investigations into the cause of the crash. Initial reports suggest challenging weather conditions, but a full report is expected in the coming weeks.

Ghanaians from all walks of life have taken to social media and public forums to express sorrow and solidarity with the families of the departed. Condolence books will be opened at selected locations across the country in the coming days.
