Ghana Bid Farewell to Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Two Victims of Helicopter Crash

Ghana on Sunday, August 10 bid farewell to Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, at a burial ceremony conducted in accordance with Islamic rites at the Burma Camp cemetery in Accra.

The two officials were among the victims of the tragic helicopter crash on 6 August 2025. Their remains were identified after DNA results, sent from South Africa, were received on Saturday, August 9.

The solemn ceremony was attended by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the National Chief Imam, ministers of state, members of parliament, family members, and hundreds of Muslims from across the country, who gathered to offer prayers in their honour.

Meanwhile, the DNA results for the remaining six victims of the crash also arrived in Ghana on Sunday, 10 August. The results were officially received by the Inspector-General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

According to officials, the confirmation of the identities paves the way for an interdenominational state funeral, which will be held on Friday, 15th August 2025 at the Black Star Square in Accra.

The August 6 helicopter crash has been described as one of Ghana’s most tragic aviation incidents in recent years, prompting nationwide mourning and a series of investigative and commemorative events.
