A military tribunal in Kinshasa has convicted former DRC President Joseph Kabila in absentia, issuing the death penalty for treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
The court found him complicit in supporting the M23 rebel group, whose violent incursions have destabilised the eastern provinces.
Charges include murder, sexual assault, torture, insurrection, and conspiracy.
Kabila was tried without appearing in court and had no legal representation.
Additionally, the ruling orders him to pay $50 billion in damages to victims and the state.
Kabila, who led the DRC from 2001 to 2019, denies the accusations and maintains that the case is politically motivated.
He has been residing mostly in South Africa since 2023, his current whereabouts are unclear.
Observers warn that the verdict may deepen political and military tensions in the conflict-scarred nation.
