FDA Suspends Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Production Over Safety Concerns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix over serious safety and quality concerns.

In a statement released on Sunday, 3rd August, 2025, the FDA confirmed that production at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited facility has been halted with immediate effect. The move follows consumer complaints and an investigation by the authority, which revealed infractions relating to manufacturing standards and public health safety.

Poor equipment maintenance and weak monitoring systems were cited as major factors compromising the integrity of the product. Specific batches in 380g and 1.05kg pouches were recalled earlier due to swelling, mould, and contamination.

“The lapses in the sealing process of the canned products raised significant safety concerns,” the FDA said. “Mould was found in some of the pouches, prompting an immediate recall and production suspension.”

Nutrifoods had already faced regulatory action in January 2025, which included a temporary ban from producing the tomato mix. The FDA has now launched internal investigations to assess whether oversight failures contributed to the current situation.

Retailers, distributors and consumers have been advised to comply with the directive and cease trading or using the affected products. The FDA says it remains committed to protecting public health and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the FDA signed the release, assuring the public of continued vigilance in food safety enforcement.
