Eden Hazard Walks Away from Football

EDEN HAZARD

The Belgian football legend Eden Hazard has offered an unvarnished and deeply personal account of why he chose to retire at just 32. Reflecting on his decision in a recent interview with podcaster Zack Nani, Hazard explained that while he “enjoyed the 90 minutes on the pitch, he no longer liked what surrounds it, travel, endless training, the media”.

This sentiment echoes earlier reflections from October 2023 when Hazard spoke candidly about his waning passion for the sport. He shared that he had long maintained he would retire once he stopped enjoying it, unequivocally stating: “I didn’t want to go and play somewhere for the money. I didn’t enjoy training anymore… and I wasn’t playing anymore. The decision was simple.”  Additionally, he affirmed, “I don’t miss playing football. … It’s perfect. I enjoy life and family with children. I can do what I want … I’m at peace with myself.”

Over his career, Hazard dazzled fans with creative brilliance and shining at Lille and cementing his legacy at Chelsea with multiple Premier League titles and personal awards before experiencing a challenging and injury-plagued period at Real Madrid. His disillusionment with the increasingly demanding nature of modern football ultimately led him to trade the spotlight for serenity.
