The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a significant step forward in its commitment to modernising public service delivery. Beginning 1st August 2025, the Authority will discontinue the issuance of aluminium number plates at Ghana’s ports and instead adopt a fully digital sticker-based system for all Drive from Port (DP) numbers.
The Management of DVLA emphasised that, this transition follows a successful pilot phase at both the Tema and Takoradi Ports, where the new system was trialled with promising results. Going forward, vehicles imported into the country will receive only DP stickers at the ports of entry. The aim is to enhance the security, efficiency, and reliability of DVLA services at one of the most critical points of national transport infrastructure.
In partnership with the State Insurance Company (SIC), the DVLA has also made arrangements to ensure that every vehicle issued with a DP sticker is provided with valid insurance coverage before it leaves the port. This cooperation is intended to ensure that road safety standards are upheld right from the point of entry.
“We believe this new system will not only speed up the registration process but also reduce fraud and improve traceability,” a spokesperson for the DVLA said. “It’s all about giving our clients a more secure and stress-free experience.”
The Authority is appealing to the general public, particularly vehicle importers, clearing agents, and stakeholders in the transport sector, to embrace the change and offer their full cooperation. DVLA assures the public that all necessary support systems are in place to make the transition smooth and convenient.

For further information, the DVLA invites the public to contact its Customer Service Centre on 0302 746760 or email info@dvla.gov.gh.
This initiative is part of the DVLA’s ongoing efforts to deliver innovative, safe, and customer-focused services, putting people first in every step of the transformation.
