The final funeral rites of Ghana’s legendary highlife musician, Daddy Lumba, is taking place today, Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Fans, family members, musicians, and sympathisers gathered at the venue to bid farewell to the iconic musician, whose music shaped generations of Ghanaian culture and entertainment. The funeral comes months after prolonged legal disputes and court summons surrounding arrangements for the burial and other related matters.

The funeral follows a period of back-and-forth disagreements among family members and other interested parties, which delayed burial plans. These unresolved matters have continued to attract public attention even as the funeral proceeds.

Today being the funeral day has not been spared; it coincides with the funerals of other national figures, including Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former Minister for Defence. Observers suggest that the overlap of multiple high-profile funerals may affect attendance at Daddy Lumba’s funeral.
As of 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning 13th December, 2025, attendance at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium appeared lower than expectations for a musician widely regarded as a national cultural asset. Unlike typical funerals of prominent public figures, as at 10:00 a.m. not much was happening and with little participation by fellow musicians and dignitaries appearing to be limited at the early stages.
Some attendees at the funeral grounds have also raised unverified concerns, questioning whether the body in the coffin is indeed that of Daddy Lumba.
Many Ghanaians believe Daddy Lumba hailed from a royal lineage and has also been described by sections of the public as a figure deserving of a state-level send-off. As a result, criticism has emerged online and at the funeral venue, with some individuals blaming family disagreements for dampening public enthusiasm for what many expected to be one of Ghana’s most historic funerals.
Despite the burial proceedings, discussions around the funeral arrangements, family relations, and the timing of interment continue.
Lumba is dead and gone and being put to rest today, but it does not look like the issues around his funeral are dead and gone yet. While the legend is being laid to rest today, public interest remains focused on whether outstanding issues will be resolved and whether the burial will proceed swiftly and peacefully.
