At the University of Cape Coast’s 57th Congregation, held across the 10th to 12th sessions, one name stood out among thousands, Cudjoe Martin. The proud son of Denu in the Volta Region was named the Overall Best Graduating Student of the College of Distance Education (CoDE), completing his Bachelor of Commerce in Management with an outstanding 3.9 CGPA out of 4.0.
Cudjoe’s journey is as inspiring as it is humble. His early education began at Kasoa Methodist Basic School and Steps to Christ Preparatory School, where his academic promise was already evident. He continued to Potsin T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, and eventually joined UCC’s distance learning programme, a path many shy away from due to its demands of self-discipline and balance.
But for Cudjoe, who has long believed in making the most of every opportunity, this was a chance to rise. Speaking at the congregation, he credited his achievement to God, hard work, family support, and “never letting go of the dream no matter how difficult things became.”
Beyond academics, Cudjoe is grounded in faith. He is a devout member of the Christian Fellowship Church, where he serves with humility. A lover of books and music, he says reading kept his mind sharp, and music gave him strength during lonely study nights.
Interestingly, he’s also a huge football fan, passionately supporting Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Chelsea FC. “Football taught me strategy and patience,” he laughed during a brief interview.
When asked about his role model, he proudly named Professor Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson, the Founding Dean of the UCC Law Faculty, citing him as “a man of wisdom, character, and vision.”
As he stood before his fellow graduates, Cudjoe urged Ghanaian youth not to be discouraged by challenges. “Distance learning requires focus and faith,” he said. “But it is possible, I’m living proof.”
