United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says many children and families are trapped in Sudan’s Darfur region because of new fighting. Since April 11, the violence has made thousands of people leave their homes, some for the second or third time.
UNICEF’s Representative in Sudan, Sheldon Yett, said:
“As fighting gets worse in Darfur, children are suffering the most in this crisis.”
Hundreds of people have died, and many others are trying to escape towns and refugee camps such as Al Fasher, Abu Shouk, and Zamzam.

The situation in Zamzam Camp is very bad. The camp which was built in 2004 is now home to about 500,000 people who were forced to leave their towns. Now, many families there are starving and losing children to hunger. On April 13, armed fighters called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took over the camp. They forced out over 400,000 people and set large parts of the camp on fire.
UNICEF says it is very hard to get help to the people who need it most. They are calling on all sides of the conflict to let aid workers reach children and families with food, water, and health care.
The situation keeps getting worse, and help from the international community is needed now to save lives in Darfur.
