Chelsea have officially secured the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dário Essugo from Sporting CP for a fee of €22.27 million (approximately £18.5 million). The 20 year old, who recently completed a loan spell at La Liga side Las Palmas has inked a contract with the Blues that runs until June 2032 with an option to extend until June 2033. Essugo made headlines in March 2021 when he became Sporting’s youngest-ever debutant at just 16 years and six days old. He further etched his name in the record books by becoming Portugal’s youngest player to feature in a UEFA Champions League match later that year .
During his loan at Las Palmas in the 2024–25 season, Essugo made 27 appearances and scored one goal, showcasing his potential as a defensive midfielder . His performances have earned him a spot in Chelsea’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States .
This acquisition aligns with Chelsea’s strategy of investing in young talent as evidenced by their recent signings of Geovany Quenda, Estevão Willian, and Kendry Páez. Essugo is expected to provide depth to Chelsea’s midfield which shall compete alongside players like Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, and Roméo Lavia.
