Calls Grow for Reintroduction of Teacher Car Scheme to Boost Morale and Mobility

Teachers across Ghana are calling on the government to consider reviving the Teacher Car Scheme, a policy that once enabled teachers to acquire vehicles through subsidised loans and flexible payment plans.

The initiative, introduced during the administration of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills (2009–2012), allowed teachers to own cars while repaying the cost over a period of five years, an arrangement that many still recall as transformational.

In the face of current economic recovery efforts, marked by a strengthening cedi and the removal of certain taxes on imports—some education stakeholders believe the time is right to reintroduce the scheme.

“The conditions now are favourable. Cars are gradually becoming more affordable, and the removal of some import duties creates an opportunity to ease the burden on teachers,” one education advocate noted.

Teachers, particularly those in rural and hard-to-reach areas, continue to face serious transportation challenges that affect their punctuality, well-being, and professional development. Many believe that providing affordable access to personal vehicles would not only boost morale but also improve productivity and efficiency in the sector.

“It’s not just about comfort, it’s about being able to reach our schools, attend training sessions, and carry out our duties with dignity,” a teacher from the Ashanti Region shared.

Some educators have even suggested that the government could consider waiving import duties specifically for teachers, in the same way it does for some priority sectors. They argue that such a gesture would be a significant statement of support for the teaching profession, especially during this period of curriculum reform and system-wide transformation.

As the country prepares for another academic year and continues its push for quality education, the question being asked across classrooms and staff rooms is simple:
“Can the Teacher Car Scheme return and if so, when?”
