Breaking: Uruquayan Footballer Commits Suicide

Uruguayan footballer Mathías Acuña, aged 32, was found dead in his hotel room in Ambato, Ecuador, on January 4, 2025. Acuña, who played as a forward for Ecuadorian Serie A club Mushuc Runa, had recently arrived for pre-season training. Local authorities are investigating his death, with preliminary reports suggesting suicide.

Prior to his death, Acuña was under investigation for alleged domestic abuse following accusations from his ex-partner. As part of the legal proceedings, he was required to wear an electronic ankle monitor, which did not restrict his travel for professional commitments.

Acuña’s football career spanned several clubs in Uruguay and Greece before joining Mushuc Runa in July 2024. His contributions were instrumental in helping the team qualify for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana.   Both Mushuc Runa and the Uruguayan Football Association have expressed their condolences to Acuña’s family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.
