Bawumia Calls for Ceasefire and Unity in Bawku Conflict

Former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for an end to the violence in Bawku, urging both Kusasis and Mamprusis to embrace peace.

Speaking in Nalerigu during the New Patriotic Party’s “Thank You” tour on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, Dr Bawumia said the two factions have more in common than what divides them and must work towards unity.

“We are the same people with so many things in common. Our languages are almost the same. We have inter-married. We are one people,” he said.

Dr Bawumia expressed sadness over the prolonged conflict, which has claimed dozens of lives, and said he fully supports the mediation efforts led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“I really want to see peace in Bawku to bring an end to the killings of innocent people. I pray the mediation team by the Asantehene will be able to bring the much-needed peace in Bawku,” he said.

The NPP flagbearer also criticised attempts to politicise the conflict, describing as “wicked lies” claims made during the 2024 election campaign that he was arming the Mamprusi side.

“I was never involved in any such thing. The peace of Bawku must be our priority, not politics,” he added.

The Bawku conflict, which has its roots in a chieftaincy dispute, remains one of Ghana’s most challenging peace and security issues.
