The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Buhari passed away today at the age of 82.
In a statement released by the AU Commission, the Chairperson extended condolences to the Government and people of Nigeria, and to the family of the late president, describing the loss as a moment of “national mourning and collective grief.”

President Buhari was praised for his principled leadership and commitment to African unity. The Chairperson described him as:
“A principled and resolute leader who served Nigeria with honour and conviction. Throughout his tenure, he remained a committed Pan-Africanist—an advocate for regional integration, good governance, and African-led solutions to the continent’s pressing challenges.”
H.E. Youssouf also highlighted Buhari’s role in promoting multilateral cooperation and peace across the continent.
The AU Chairperson saluted Buhari’s contributions to Africa’s development and voice on the international stage, calling him a “tireless champion of peace and stability.”
