The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to present his report on the mediation of the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict to President John Dramani Mahama today, Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
The announcement was contained in an official communiqué issued by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recently concluded months of intensive mediation efforts aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict in the Bawku traditional area. The process culminated in a final face-to-face meeting between the contending parties on Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi.

The meeting brought together representatives of the two main factions in the conflict. A 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of the Tarana Traditional Area, represented His Majesty Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Naayiri and Overlord of the Mamprugu and Mamprusis. The delegation included chiefs, legal practitioners, academics, opinion leaders, and youth representatives, with Dr. Issah serving as spokesperson.
On the other side, Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga, led the delegation representing Zugraan Asigri Aburgrago Azoka II, the Bawku Naba, and the Kusasi people. Hon. Cletus Avoka acted as spokesperson for the Kusasi delegation. Their team also comprised chiefs, lawyers, academics, opinion leaders, and youth leaders.
According to a statement issued by the Manhyia Palace, the mediation followed several months of separate consultations with both parties before the Asantehene brought them together in a final attempt to chart a pathway toward lasting peace.
“After spending several months listening to both parties present their arguments in separate meetings, His Majesty brought both sides together to speak directly to each other in a final effort to explore a pathway to lasting resolution of the issues that have persistently undermined peace in the Bawku traditional area,” the statement said.
The Palace noted that the meeting was conducted in a cordial atmosphere, with both sides acknowledging that they are one people and emphasizing that there is no justification for continued conflict.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended the parties for their maturity and civility and urged them to prepare their supporters for a permanent end to violence and disorder, regardless of the outcome of the mediation.
The Bawku conflict is a long-standing chieftaincy and ethnic dispute involving the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. Over the years, several mediation efforts have been undertaken, including government-established committees, local inter-ethnic peace initiatives, the National Peace Council, and the current high-level mediation led by the Asantehene.
The presentation of the mediation report to President Mahama is expected to inform the government’s next steps toward restoring lasting peace in the Bawku area.
