Ghana’s Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has officially petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, over an alleged assault by a police officer during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration.
According to the petition, the incident occurred at the entrance of Parliament House on Monday, May 5, 2025, while the Minority Leader was leading a peaceful protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin identified the officer involved as Police Constable Forson, described as “a tall, fair, and heavily built” man. He claims the officer deliberately hit him hard on the chest, causing physical pain and temporary breathlessness.
“I was dazed and gasping for breath after the attack. The officer knew exactly who I was,” Afenyo-Markin stated in his petition.
The Ghana Police Service has since confirmed that both the MP and the said officer have been invited to assist with ongoing investigations. Public calls for accountability have intensified following the incident.
The protest, branded as the #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, was organized to oppose the removal proceedings against the Chief Justice and to defend judicial independence.
