Entertainer and politician Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as Kwame A Plus, has been elected as the new Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central in the Central Region, ending the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) eight-year hold on the constituency.
This is according to provisional results coming in from the constituency one day after the country went to the polls to elect a new President and Parliamentarians to rule the next 4 years.
Running as an independent candidate, Kwame A Plus achieved a decisive victory in the December 7 parliamentary election, securing 14,277 votes out of the 36,026 valid votes cast. He defeated the incumbent MP, Naana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP, who obtained 11,637 votes. Ywason Mohamed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) placed third with 10,112 votes.
This victory marks Kwame A Plus’s first entry into Parliament and has shocked the incumbent MP and her supporters. Naana Eyiah, who also serves as the Deputy Minister for the Interior, had been in Parliament for two terms, winning the seat in both 2016 and 2020 with significant margins.
Kwame A Plus celebrated his victory with jubilant street processions and announced his win on social media even before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration. His success is largely attributed to dissatisfaction among the youth, who criticised the perceived lack of developmental projects during Naana Eyiah’s tenure.
Once considered an NPP stronghold since 2016, Gomoa Central has now shifted its support to Kwame A Plus. He has vowed to fulfil his campaign promises and drive development in the constituency.
The 2024 elections were contested by 12 presidential and 807 parliamentary candidates across various constituencies.
