Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency in the Ashanti Region, delivered an address at the 2024 Global Infrastructure Conference.
The conference, organized by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), took place in Geneva, Switzerland, and gathered an impressive assembly of world leaders, experts, policymakers, and professionals from the fields of engineering, construction, and infrastructure.
In his keynote speech, Hon. Asenso-Boakye highlighted the significant progress made in Ghana’s road infrastructure under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration over the past seven years. He detailed on how these strategic investments have transformed the lives of many Ghanaians, especially in rural communities, leading to notable improvements in poverty reduction.
The Minister supported his points with data, noting that Ghana now boasts 32.8 kilometers of roads per 100 square kilometers—nearly double the average for the African continent. Rural access to all-weather roads has risen to 63%, marking a substantial increase from the regional average of 47%.
He stressed that these developments have had a tangible impact on daily life, including a 180% increase in trips to health facilities, a threefold increase in household incomes in some regions, and a 60% reduction in travel times to essential health services.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing sustainable and resilient infrastructure that will benefit both present and future generations. He emphasized the importance of deepening partnerships with key development partners and stakeholders to ensure the continued advancement of Ghana’s infrastructure.
