On Monday, 9th September 2024, Nana Akufo-Addo had the honor of delivering his final address as President of the Republic of Ghana to the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) at its annual conference.
The event, which commenced on Sunday, 8th September 2024, is expected to end on Friday, 13th September 2024. The conference is held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, under the theme “Peaceful, Fair, and Transparent Elections: The Key to Sustainable Democracy.”
The conference was attended by high-profile individuals, including H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and other distinguished legal professionals. The presence of these prominent figures added significance to the discussions on how the legal framework can contribute to the peaceful and transparent conduct of elections in Ghana.
During his address, President Akufo-Addo reflected on his journey in public service, noting that it began within the legal profession. He shared that he has always felt most at home among his colleagues at the Bar, as the values of justice, equity, and the rule of law, which are at the core of the legal profession, have been the guiding principles of his presidency. He expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve his country and emphasized that the legal profession has played a central role in shaping his leadership.
“As I reflect on my career, both as a lawyer and as President, I am reminded of the critical role the Bar has played in shaping my worldview and my commitment to democracy,” Akufo-Addo remarked. He further elaborated that from his early years as a lawyer in the 1970s to the legal battles during the challenging times of military rule, the law has consistently been his tool for defending the rights and freedoms of Ghanaians.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that his presidency, in many ways, has been an extension of his dedication to the rule of law. He stated that he has worked tirelessly to ensure that transparency, accountability, and justice remain central to Ghana’s governance. He expressed confidence that the legal frameworks his administration has strengthened will continue to serve the nation well in the future.
In his concluding remarks, President Akufo-Addo expressed his sincere gratitude to the GBA and all Ghanaians for their support throughout his tenure. “It has been an honor to serve as President, and I am proud of the progress we have made together. Let us continue to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and democracy for the good of our nation,” he urged.
