The 2026/27 Premier League season has wasted little time reminding football fans why it remains one of the most unpredictable leagues in the world.
After the opening round of weekend fixtures, several teams have made impressive starts, while others already have questions to answer. Newly promoted sides have made an immediate impact, established clubs have stumbled, new managers have experienced contrasting fortunes, and some of the biggest talking points have come from results few expected before the season began.
With Fulham vs Chelsea still to be played on Monday, the weekend has nevertheless provided plenty to analyse.
Brighton leads the EPL table make the biggest statement
If one team has made the loudest opening statement, it is Brighton & Hove Albion.
Brighton demolished Aston Villa 4-0, scoring all four goals before half-time and producing one of the most impressive performances of the opening weekend.
The result puts Brighton at the top of the early Premier League table on goal difference.
For Aston Villa, however, the afternoon could hardly have been worse. The defeat was accompanied by a red card for João Gomes, while Unai Emery’s side looked vulnerable throughout the first half.
It is far too early to draw major conclusions from one match, but Brighton have certainly given the rest of the league something to think about.
Hull City stun Manchester United
The biggest shock of the opening round came at the MKM Stadium, Hull.
Newly promoted Hull City defeated Manchester United 2-0, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring in the first half.
Hull returned to the Premier League after nine years and immediately recorded a historic league victory over Manchester United – their first against United in 52 years.
What makes the result even more striking is that Manchester United enjoyed the majority of possession and registered 21 shots. However, possession did not translate into enough quality opportunities, while Hull were ruthless from set pieces.
The result leaves Michael Carrick’s side with an early reality check after the optimism surrounding United during pre-season.
Manchester United’s biggest concern may be the attack
It would be easy to blame the defeat entirely on defensive mistakes, but United’s attacking performance deserves just as much scrutiny.
Despite dominating possession, United struggled to break down Hull’s compact defensive structure. Their chances were often low quality, and the team lacked the penetration needed to turn territorial dominance into goals.
That means Carrick has plenty to work on before United’s next fixture.
One poor opening-day performance does not define a season, but the manner of the defeat makes it difficult to dismiss the result as simply bad luck.
Promoted clubs make an immediate impact
One of the most interesting stories from the opening weekend has been the performance of the newly promoted teams.
Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0.
Ipswich Town defeated Sunderland 2-1, with Jack Clarke scoring a 90th-minute winner.
Leeds United also won, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0.
That means all three promoted clubs began the campaign with victories, an extraordinary start for teams expected by many to be involved in a battle for survival.
It is obviously too early to suggest that all three will survive, but the opening weekend has already shown that the promoted sides should not be underestimated.
Tottenham suffer a nightmare start
Tottenham Hotspur also endured a difficult opening weekend, losing 3-0 to Brentford.
The result is particularly notable because of the expectations surrounding Spurs following their major summer investment.
Brentford, meanwhile, produced a confident display and gave Tottenham very few opportunities to recover after taking control of the contest.
For Tottenham, the defeat immediately places pressure on the new project.
The key question is whether this was simply a poor opening-day performance or an early indication that there are deeper problems to solve.
Arsenal begin their title defence with a statement
Reigning champions Arsenal made the perfect start to their title defence, beating Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
The result gives Arsenal three points and puts them among the early leaders.
For Coventry, returning to the Premier League after 25 years was always going to present a huge challenge, and opening against the defending champions was about as difficult a first assignment as they could have received.
Arsenal’s opening victory therefore sends an early message that their title defence will not be surrendered easily.
Manchester City survive a late scare
The beginning of the Enzo Maresca era at Manchester City produced plenty of drama.
City fell behind against Bournemouth but fought back to win 2-1, with Marc Guéhi equalising before Josko Gvardiol scored the decisive goal in stoppage time.
The victory gives Maresca three points in his first Premier League match as City’s manager and provides an encouraging start to the club’s post-Pep Guardiola era.
However, the performance also showed that City may need time to adjust to a new tactical identity after Guardiola’s departure.
The ability to come from behind and win will certainly please Maresca, but there is still plenty to develop.
Liverpool leave Newcastle with a point
Liverpool’s new manager Andoni Iraola began his Premier League reign with a dramatic 2-2 draw at Newcastle United.
Newcastle led late in the match, but Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the 99th minute, which Dominik Szoboszlai converted to rescue a point.
It was a dramatic conclusion to a match that also marked an important new chapter for Liverpool under Iraola.
Liverpool will probably view the point positively given the circumstances, but Newcastle will feel that victory slipped through their fingers.
Everton start strongly
Everton defeated Crystal Palace 2-0, giving David Moyes’ side a positive start to the campaign.
The clean sheet will be particularly encouraging, while the three points provide an early platform from which Everton can build.
After winning their opening match, Everton immediately find themselves among the early group of teams with maximum points.
Leeds announce themselves
Leeds United defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 to complete an impressive opening weekend for the newly promoted clubs.
The result also spoiled Oliver Glasner’s first Premier League match in charge of Forest.
For Leeds, however, the significance goes beyond three points. Away victories can prove extremely valuable for promoted sides, particularly when the objective is to establish themselves quickly in the division.
The early Premier League table
With one fixture still outstanding, the early table already makes interesting reading.
Brighton lead the way on goal difference, followed by Brentford and Arsenal, all on three points.
Everton, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Manchester City and Leeds United are also among the teams with victories.
At the other end, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Coventry City and Aston Villa are all in the bottom four after losing their opening matches.
The positions mean very little at this stage of the campaign, but the contrast is certainly eye-catching.

A 4-0 defeat, a red card and a place at the bottom of the table make for a miserable opening weekend.

The Magpies were seconds away from a famous victory over Liverpool before conceding a 99th-minute penalty.
But should we panic after one weekend?
Probably not.
The Premier League is a 38-match marathon, not a one-match sprint.
Brighton will face much tougher challenges than Aston Villa. Manchester United will have opportunities to respond. Tottenham have an entire season to develop under their new project. Aston Villa can recover, and the promoted teams will eventually encounter the realities of playing 38 matches against Premier League opposition.
The first weekend should therefore be viewed as evidence rather than a verdict.
What it does provide is an early indication of which teams have started with confidence, which teams still need to find their rhythm and which managers already have problems to solve.
The big questions heading into Matchweek 2
Can Hull City maintain their momentum?
Will Manchester United respond immediately?
Was Brighton’s 4-0 victory the beginning of something special?
Can Tottenham recover from their heavy defeat?
Will the three promoted teams continue their remarkable start?
And can Liverpool and Newcastle turn their dramatic opening-day performances into something more consistent?
Those questions will begin to receive answers when Matchweek 2 arrives.
For now, however, the biggest lesson from the opening weekend is simple:
The Premier League has returned and it has already delivered the unexpected.
