The Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu Proposes National Cultural Dress Day for Schools

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has proposed the introduction of a national cultural dress day in schools as part of broader efforts to preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage and strengthen national identity among learners.

The proposal was made in Accra on February 10, 2026, during the closing ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Speaking at the event, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu emphasised that while scientific advancement and innovation are critical to national development, education must also deliberately nurture Ghanaian values and cultural consciousness.

According to the Minister, designating a day for students to wear traditional attire would provide an opportunity for learners across the country to showcase the diversity of Ghana’s cultural heritage. He noted that such an initiative would foster national pride while encouraging students to appreciate the customs, symbols, and values of their respective communities.

“Probably, we should declare a day when every Ghanaian learner must go in culturally fitting dress to observe our day nationwide so that each culture, each society, will reflect its values and culture as we observe it,” the Minister stated.

The proposal was made alongside remarks on the role of education, science, and innovation in shaping Ghana’s future. The Minister observed that while quantum science and technology represent the frontiers of modern knowledge, education must remain anchored in the country’s cultural foundations to ensure balanced and sustainable development.

He further shared a light-hearted anecdote about a friendly discussion between Ghana and Zambia over what constitutes traditional smock attire, highlighting how cultural expressions often stimulate dialogue, learning, and mutual respect among nations.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu concluded that integrating cultural awareness into education would make national celebrations more inclusive and participatory, particularly for young people. He stressed that initiatives grounded in both scientific progress and cultural identity are essential for building a confident and cohesive society.
