The Sekyere Kumawu District Education Directorate has successfully organized a Reading Festival for Kindergarten (KG) and Primary learners as part of efforts to strengthen foundational literacy skills among pupils in the district. The educational event was held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at the Bodomase Circuit, with seven public basic schools participating in the maiden edition of the festival.

The Reading Festival was designed to assess and improve the reading abilities of learners at the foundational level, particularly in KG and lower primary classes, where early literacy development plays a critical role in a child’s overall academic journey. Through reading aloud, word recognition, and pronunciation, the festival offered a practical platform to evaluate how well pupils are acquiring essential reading skills.

According to exclusive information gathered by GH Educate, the reading festival initiative was introduced by the District Director of Education for Kumawu, Mr. Kwame Oduro-Owusu. The programme is expected to be extended to the remaining five circuits within the Sekyere Kumawu Education Directorate in the coming weeks, making it a district-wide intervention aimed at improving literacy outcomes.

The competition was carefully assessed by a panel made up of experienced education officers, including Madam Esther Amoakoh, the Early Childhood Education Coordinator; Mr. Owusu Kwarteng, Head of Department (HOD) for Finance and Administration; and Nana Kwame Obeng Frimpong, HOD for Supervision and Monitoring. Their role was to ensure fairness, accuracy, and professional judgment throughout the assessment process.

Reports from the event indicated mixed performance levels among the learners. While some pupils demonstrated remarkable improvement in reading fluency and confidence, others struggled to read simple sentences or pronounce basic words. This outcome, according to education officials, highlights existing learning gaps that must be addressed urgently.

Nana Kwame Obeng Frimpong, speaking to teachers after the event, on behalf of the District Director, noted that the Reading Festival had revealed the true reading abilities of learners across the participating schools. He encouraged teachers to intensify their efforts, adopt more learner-centered teaching approaches, and place greater emphasis on early reading skills to help pupils build a strong academic foundation.
