Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s stance that long hair will not be permitted in Senior High Schools, stressing that education is not only about academics but also about building discipline and character.
Speaking at the 75th Anniversary of Mawuli Senior High School in the Volta Region, the Minister said schools remain responsible for shaping responsible citizens, and this responsibility includes upholding rules on appearance, uniformity and conduct. “Our schools are places where character is moulded, not only the mind,” he remarked.
Addressing recent public debate, the Minister referred to a viral video involving a female student who was instructed to cut her hair by school authorities. The video sparked nationwide conversation about student rights, personal expression and school discipline. However, Hon. Iddrisu stood firm, saying, “If we give in to hair today, tomorrow it will be shoes.”
He explained that allowing exceptions to established school regulations may lead to a gradual erosion of discipline and order. According to him, rules about hair and uniforms are designed not to suppress individuality but to promote equality, modesty and focus among students.
The Minister acknowledged that the conversation around student identity is important, but insisted that structure and discipline remain essential for academic success and moral development. He appealed to parents and the public to support teachers and school authorities in maintaining these standards.
“Discipline is not a form of punishment; it is preparation for life,” he said. He added that uniformity in schools helps reduce unnecessary competition and social pressure, allowing students to concentrate on their studies and personal growth.
Hon. Iddrisu also assured that the Ministry is open to constructive dialogue with stakeholders, but reiterated that core values such as respect, responsibility and obedience to rules must not be compromised.
He concluded by encouraging students to view discipline as a pathway to leadership and integrity, affirming the government’s commitment to an education system that balances freedom with responsibility and rights with duty.
