Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has reiterated the Mahama administration’s firm commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of teachers across Ghana. He made the remarks during the 7th Quadrennial Conference of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Addressing a gathering of educators, union leaders, and stakeholders in education, Dr. Amoakohene acknowledged the invaluable role teachers play in shaping Ghana’s future. He conveyed the appreciation of President John Dramani Mahama to all educators for their dedication and sacrifices, especially in the face of economic challenges and systemic constraints.

Dr. Amoakohene outlined a number of key initiatives being implemented by the Mahama administration to improve teacher motivation and retention. These include a 20% rural allowance for teachers who accept postings to remote and underserved communities, the Teacher Dabrɛ housing programme designed to provide affordable accommodation, and the clearance of long-standing promotion backlogs and salary arrears.
He also emphasized the government’s continued investment in educational infrastructure and the provision of quality teaching and learning materials as a foundation for meaningful educational reform.

“As teachers, you are nation builders. Your work shapes the minds, values, and dreams of generations. President Mahama understands this, and that is why we are working hard to restore dignity and motivation in the teaching profession,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
With GNAT’s regional elections scheduled for Tuesday, 29th July, the Regional Minister extended his best wishes to all contestants, encouraging them to remain focused on service, unity, and advocacy for teachers’ rights.
“In unity and commitment, we will transform Ghana’s education system to reflect the hopes of every learner and the aspirations of every teacher,” Dr. Frank Amoakohene concluded.
