The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Daniel Fenyi, has called for the full reinstatement and support of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) across the country, emphasizing their critical role in addressing infrastructural challenges in public basic schools.
Mr. Fenyi, in a recent media engagement, stated that the burden of providing essential learning infrastructure must not fall on the shoulders of schoolchildren. “It is not the duty of a child to provide school infrastructure or procure tables and chairs,” he remarked, stressing the need for parents and communities to collaborate with schools through structured PTAs.
His comments come at a time when many public schools continue to face serious deficits in infrastructure and teaching materials, leading to pupils studying under trees, on bare floors, or in overcrowded and poorly equipped classrooms.
He noted that PTAs, when properly structured and regulated, serve as vital partners in supporting school development and complementing government efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions. According to Mr. Fenyi, the active involvement of parents in school affairs strengthens accountability and community ownership of education outcomes.
He urged stakeholders including educational authorities, local assemblies, and parents to foster a culture of cooperation and investment in basic education, particularly through the revitalization of PTA structures.
The GES PRO further appealed for clearer policy guidelines to empower PTAs to contribute effectively and transparently while ensuring that their operations align with national education goals and standards.
His advocacy has been welcomed by many educationists and civil society organizations, who believe that a vibrant PTA system is key to bridging the resource gap and promoting quality education in Ghana’s public schools.
