The National Service Authority (NSA) has taken decisive steps to eliminate ghost names from its payroll, insisting that all personnel must possess a valid Ghana Card to register for national service.

Speaking in Accra, the Executive Director of the Authority, Felix Gyamfi, emphasised that this policy is non-negotiable and forms part of a broader national effort to sanitise public sector payrolls.
“This is not just about administrative convenience; it’s about protecting the public purse,” Mr Gyamfi said. “We are working to ensure that every national service personnel is verifiable and accounted for through a unified national identity system.”

The new directive means prospective service personnel who fail to link their registration to the Ghana Card will be ineligible for deployment. According to the NSA, the move will help streamline the deployment process and prevent fraudulent claims, which have plagued the system for years.
The National Identification Authority (NIA), which oversees the issuance of Ghana Cards, has pledged its support to the NSS by ensuring timely card distribution to all eligible applicants.
Observers say the directive complements ongoing digitisation and payroll reforms across government institutions and is expected to save millions of cedis annually.
“This is a crackdown on fraud, but also a step toward greater efficiency,” Mr Gyamfi noted.
