Lack of SHS boarding facilities forcing some female students to stay with boyfriends

The Headmistress of Chemu Senior High School (SHS), Mrs. Vicentia Annin-Agyei, has raised strong concerns over the inadequate boarding facilities at the school, warning that the situation is exposing students to serious social risks, including cohabiting with boyfriends or girlfriends.

Speaking during a public engagement, Mrs. Annin-Agyei revealed that the lack of sufficient infrastructure has left many students without proper accommodation near the school. As a result, some female students, unable to secure safe and affordable housing, end up living with their boyfriends just to be able to attend classes regularly.

The headmistress described the situation as “worrying and unacceptable,” noting that Chemu SHS currently operates a transitional system where not all year groups can be accommodated at once. She explained that the existing boarding and classroom facilities are overstretched, leaving hundreds of students to find alternative and often unsafe living arrangements.

Mrs. Annin-Agyei made a passionate appeal to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and other relevant authorities to prioritize the provision of new boarding houses and classroom blocks. According to her, expanding infrastructure is critical not only for academic excellence but also for protecting the moral and social development of students.

She further warned that without immediate intervention, the situation could lead to an increase in school dropouts, teenage pregnancies, and other social problems among students.

Parents and school authorities are said to be increasingly concerned, with calls for urgent government attention to prevent the growing crisis. Some parents have also appealed for temporary measures such as partnerships with hostels or the provision of transportation support for students living far from the school.

Chemu SHS, one of Ghana’s prominent secondary schools located in Tema, continues to produce academically successful students despite these challenges. However, the headmistress emphasized that without addressing the infrastructure deficits, the school’s mission to offer quality education in a safe environment will be undermined.
