500,000 Immigrants to Lose Legal Status in US Over Trump’s Order

The United States is revoking legal status for more than 500,000 immigrants as part of President Donald Trump’s pledge to curb immigration and carry out mass deportations, primarily targeting arrivals from Latin American nations.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) order, set to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, will give affected immigrants 30 days to leave the country unless they secure an alternative immigration status. This means that those under the Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (CHNV) program must depart by April 24 or face removal.

The order directly impacts around 532,000 individuals who entered the US under the Biden-era CHNV scheme, which allowed up to 30,000 migrants per month to stay for two years. President Joe Biden initially touted the program as a “safe and humane” alternative to ease pressure on the overcrowded US-Mexico border, but DHS now insists that parole was always intended to be temporary.

“Parole is inherently temporary, and parole alone is not an underlying basis for obtaining any immigration status, nor does it constitute an admission to the United States

Immigration Lawyers Warn of Legal Chaos

The decision has sparked concerns among immigration advocates. Welcome.US, an organization supporting migrants, has urged affected individuals to seek immediate legal assistance.

Nicolette Glazer, an immigration lawyer in California, said the move will leave most CHNV beneficiaries without legal status.

Only 75,000 affirmative asylum applications were filed, so the vast majority of the CHNV parolees will find themselves without status, work permits, and subject to removal

The chaos will be unreal

Trump’s Tough Stance on Deportations

President Trump has vowed to implement the largest deportation operation in US history. Just last weekend, he invoked rare wartime legislation to deport over 200 alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador, which has reportedly offered to detain migrants and even US citizens at a discount.

More than seven million Venezuelans have fled their country over the past decade as economic collapse and sanctions under President Nicolás Maduro have fueled a massive migration crisis.
