The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, has urged Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama to make the development of the Northern Region a top priority. Speaking during Mahama’s visit to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the traditional ruler emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, education, and healthcare to enhance the livelihoods of people in the region.
Yaa Naa acknowledged the appointment of individuals from the north to key government positions but stressed that more tangible development projects were needed. He highlighted challenges such as poor road networks, limited access to quality healthcare, and inadequate educational facilities, which continue to affect the region’s growth.
In response, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the region’s economy, outlining plans to focus on agribusiness, mechanization, and modern farming techniques. He stated that boosting food production and creating employment opportunities would be central to his development agenda for the north.
His visit comes at a time when discussions about regional inequalities and economic disparities remain a key issue in Ghana’s political landscape. With the 2024 elections approaching, the call for Northern Region’s development is likely to feature prominently in policy debates.
