Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast: Celebrating the 187th Speech and Prize Giving Day

Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast held its 187th Speech and Prize Giving Day on Saturday, 10th February 2024, at the school premises. The theme of the programme was ‘Maintaining Academic Excellence Through Holistic Learner-Centered Practice: The Roles of Stakeholders.’

The guest of honor for the program was the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency, Nana Akufo-Addo. Other personalities included the Most Rev. Dr. Paul K Boafo, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education – Ghana, Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of Ghana Education Service, and the Governing Board Members of the school, among others.

Address of the Head of the School

The Head Teacher delivered an address note for the program. In the address, the head indicated that Wesley Girls’ High School is one of the oldest schools in the history of Ghana. It is recognized as one of the best-performing schools in Ghana, having produced prominent women within Ghana and beyond. The school consistently excels in the National Science and Maths Quiz, Inter-Colleges Sports Competition, and all other important activities.

The school is known for its discipline, both socially and morally. The head stated that every parent wishes to send his/her ward to Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast, for a better future for their female ward(s). The Head indicated that the 187th Speech and Prize Giving Day is themed ‘Maintaining Academic Excellence Through Holistic Learner-Centered Practice: The Roles of Stakeholders.’ To this, the head is calling on all stakeholders who have been helping over the years to come on board once again in making the school more competitive on the global scene. The Head Teacher of the school warmly welcomed all the distinguished guests at the program.

The Cadet Corps of the school marched and displayed their flag. The President and other dignitaries conducted the inspection. The display by the Cadet Corps was spectacular. The entire student body of the school was very attentive during the program.

Address of the President at the Occasion

The President, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, delivered his address at the occasion as the special guest of honor. The President expressed his singular appreciation for the school, honoring him for such an important celebration of the 187th Speech and Prize Giving Day.

His Excellency, Nana Akufo-Addo, emphasized in his address that many Ghanaian women excelling in various sectors and institutions within Ghana and other countries could trace their roots back to Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast. This achievement is commendable and worthy of celebration. He urged the Governing Board of the school, the Head Teacher, teachers, and all stakeholders to hold firm to the good work they are doing in producing more refined and zealous women for Ghana and beyond. The President advised the students to stay focused and excel academically, as they always do.

As part of the program, the President commissioned six modern science laboratories, each stocked with relevant science equipment, for the school. The President congratulated the school for its remarkable performance over the years.

Most Rev. Dr. Paul K. Boafo, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, delivered a brief address, assuring the staff and students of the church’s commitment to the school. He encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their studies. Most Rev. Dr. Paul K. Boafo also congratulated all the awardees at the program.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also addressed the program. He spoke about the ministry’s vision for Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) in secondary schools in Ghana. Dr. Yaw Adutwum encouraged the students, especially the Science students, to take their academics seriously.
