JUST IN: GNAT Demands Urgent Reforms to End Indiscipline in Senior High Schools

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is calling for immediate and decisive action to curb the alarming rise of indiscipline in Senior High Schools. Thomas Tanko Musah, the association’s General Secretary has expressed grave concern over the increasing misconduct and violence among students and he has warned that failure to act now could lead to dire consequences for Ghana’s educational system.

The situation has reached a crisis point with reports of students openly defying authority but interested in engaging in violent confrontations  and even carrying weapons onto school premises. A particularly shocking incident involved a final year student at O’Reilly Senior High School in Accra who was fatally stabbed by a fellow student. This tragic event has reignited public discourse on the urgent need for stronger disciplinary measures.

Musah lamented that modern students exhibit a level of boldness that was once unthinkable, a phenomenon he likened to the defiance seen in illegal mining activities. “Today, when students come to school, they arrive with mobile phones, and some even come armed,” he revealed, emphasizing the growing threat to both teachers and students. GNAT has warned that if drastic steps are not taken soon, schools may have to rely on military intervention to restore order.

To tackle this escalating crisis, GNAT is calling for an emergency stakeholder meeting involving the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, Parent-Teacher Associations, and other relevant bodies. The association insists that only a united and nationwide effort can effectively address the root causes of indiscipline in schools and restore an environment conducive for learning.

The situation demands immediate attention. Indiscipline, if left unchecked, threatens not only academic performance but also the moral fabric of the next generation. GNAT’s call is a wake-up call for policymakers, educators, and parents alike. The time for deliberation is over action must be taken now to safeguard the future of Ghana’s youth.
