Information circulating on social media suggests that the Cabinet of Ghana has approved the proposed Gifted and Talented Education Program, as advocated by the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
During the recent State of Education in Ghana address, Dr. Adutwum disclosed that the Ministry of Education had submitted a proposal to the Cabinet seeking approval for the introduction of a specialized education program tailored for gifted and talented students in Ghana.
Dr. Adutwum emphasized that students with exceptional learning abilities and skills often struggle within the traditional mixed-stream education system prevalent in Ghana. He pointed out that such learners are frequently recommended for placement in technical and vocational schools, a suggestion he believes is not the most suitable approach for addressing their unique needs.
According to him, the current system does not adequately support or challenge these students, which could hinder their development and potential.
In light of these concerns, Dr. Adutwum proposed the implementation of Gifted and Talented Education Program within the Ghanaian educational framework. He argued that this policy would create a more supportive environment, specifically designed to nurture and maximize the abilities and potential of exceptional learners.
Dr. Adutwum stressed that the program is intended to provide specialized resources, advanced curricula, and tailored support to ensure that gifted and talented students can achieve their highest potential. The program aims to offer them the appropriate challenges and opportunities for growth, which are often lacking in a standard educational setting, he stated.
GH Educate will continue to monitor the development of this initiative closely and provide updates as new information becomes available.
