Betting Tax, E-Levy, and Others Abolished as President Assents to Bills

Mahama on Abolished E-Levy Bill

President John Mahama has assented to the bills that abolish the Betting Tax, Emission Tax, E-Levy, among others.

The President’s assent to these bills fulfills a campaign promise made before the 2024 general elections in Ghana.

During his campaign tour before the election, the President indicated that these taxes were placing a financial burden on Ghanaians. He pledged that if given the mandate again, he would abolish them.

In line with this promise, after Parliament passed the bills on March 26, 2025, the President assented to them in honor of his commitment.

The repeal of the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and other taxes has been widely welcomed by Ghanaians, many of whom strongly opposed them.

It is important to note that the E-Levy was introduced in 2022 by the previous government (New Patriotic Party) and initially imposed a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers, bank transfers, and online payments. This was later reduced to 1%.

The introduction of these taxes sparked protests, with critics arguing that they placed an undue burden on low-income earners.

The signing of the bills is expected to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians and drive economic growth.
