Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in the Ghanaian Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, has expressed his displeasure and sadness regarding an action taken by the Speaker of Parliament.

His comments follow the declaration by the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, that four Parliamentary seats are now vacant. These seats belong to Members of Parliament who have decided to contest in Ghana’s upcoming December elections.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin has criticized this decision, stating that it was inappropriate and unfair for the Speaker to declare these seats vacant. He emphasized that such a move was ill-timed and harmful to the parliamentary process.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin also made it clear that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament are not perturbed by the Speaker’s action. Instead, they plan to seek a legal ruling on the matter to clarify the issue. He revealed that he has already filed an appeal with the Supreme Court to challenge the Speaker’s decision and is hopeful that the Court will provide a fair interpretation.

In his address, he urged all members of the NPP to remain calm as the legal process has already begun. He reassured them that the party would seek the proper legal interpretation of the Speaker’s action through the Court’s ruling.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin’s comments have drawn significant attention, and many are watching the developments closely to see how the legal proceedings will unfold.
