Ghana celebrates a living legend as Mr. Owusu Nelson, an esteemed educationist, devout Catholic, and respected statesman, turns 90 years old on Tuesday, 4 June 2025. A proud son of Agona Afamenaso and a member of the Bretuo family, Mr. Nelson’s extraordinary life journey has left an indelible mark on education, politics, faith, and family.
Mr. Nelson served as the first Presiding Member of the then Afigya Sekyere District Assembly, now Sekyere South Municipal. In 1992, he represented his district as a committee member in the drafting of Ghana’s Fourth Republic Constitution, a historic national duty that speaks to his leadership and integrity.
In the Catholic Church, Mr. Nelson has served with deep devotion as a founding member of the Agona Roman Catholic Church and on several committees within the Konongo-Mampong Diocese. His spiritual identity is matched by a lifetime of educational service in both Ghana and Nigeria, where he taught in renowned institutions such as Prempeh College, Agona SDA Secondary School, Agona Secondary Technical School, and Catholic Technical Institute (CTI).
Beyond the classroom and public life, Mr. Nelson is widely admired as a motivational speaker, life coach, counsellor, historian, storyteller, and writer. His talent in English and Twi has made him a go-to proofreader for newspapers and publications. He is also remembered fondly for his love of dancing and the joy he brings to all around him.
Mr. Nelson’s legacy continues through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—many of whom embody his values of discipline, humility, intelligence, leadership, and service.
Today, the Owusu family, the people of Agona, and many across Ghana and beyond celebrate “The Pillar of Wisdom”—a man whose life has served as a compass for generations.
